History of the Hall
The inspiration for Newick Village Hall was that Lionel Cox wanted a building in the village for the Amateur Dramatic Society with a decent stage, lighting and dressing rooms. He set about providing a new building designed and built by local residents . He made a deliberate choice to use a local architect, a local contractor with local labour. The foundation stone was laid in July 1932 and the building finished by December. The opening ceremony was in the hall in December 1932.
The most famous actor to appear on the stage in the hall is Dirk Bogarde so Newick is justified in saying that his career started here in the village.
After the war, the premises were purchased by a small group of local residents for it to be vested in trustees to manage the hall for the benefit of the village. On the 23rd May 1947 the transfer completed and the building belonged to the village.
Improvements at the building have continued under the Management Committee to keep the building fresh and modern. These include a new extension to include new toilets, new heating, car park surfacing, a new floor, new windows and doors and an acoustic ceiling. The hall provides a fine, large venue for a wide variety of functions, celebrations and meetings.
